Yachting: Day Skipper Practical Weekender. One of three weekends in the Solent
This practical training programme follows the same syllabus as our five day course leading to the RYA Day Skipper certificate, but it is run over three weekends.
The course takes you from RYA Competent Crew (or equivalent sailing level) to RYA Day Skipper. We recommend combining it with a Day Skipper Shorebased Theory week, where you learn the basics of navigation and chartwork in the classroom.
You join the boat to meet your skipper/instructor and the rest of the crew: a maximum of five students. We don't confirm the itinerary until the weather is known but you can expect to spend Saturday night in Cowes.
You will improve your knowledge of navigation, seamanship, boat handling and crew management, giving you the technical knowledge and confidence to skipper a small yacht in familiar waters.
We recommend you don't leave it too long between each weekend.
The course starts and finishes at Port Hamble Marina.

If availability on this date is shown below as Waitlist our boats are full. Please contact us via the menu on the left to see if we can run an extra boat.

What you get
RYA Day Skipper Practical
Before you start
You should either hold the RYA Competent Crew qualification or have had equivalent experience. You have spent at least one week on a sailing yacht and are confident as a crew-member under supervision
You must understand the basics of pilotage and be familiar with navigation in tidal waters using paper charts. If you are unused to navigation we recommend joining a Day Skipper Shorebased Theory course first
Although it is not a formal requirement we recommend you should have a VHF radio licence, available with Flying Fish on a one day course, Rescue and Safety: RYA Short Range Radio
What next
Your next Flying Fish course should be our Basic Safety Training STCW 95 week or Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Part 2 (Coastal Skipper Training)
If you don't take your skipper training any further you should at least get your VHF radio licence. Search our course titles for Rescue and Safety: RYA Short Range Radio
For professional qualifications to work in yachting, search again and select a Yachtmaster Traineeship
Included in the price
Accommodation with meals on the yacht, safety equipment, tuition and publications. We can provide your wet weather clothing if you need it
