Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Part 1 (Pro Crew Training)
Master of Yachts Part 1 is a six week foundation course for professional skippers and crew. Recreational sailors will also benefit from the professional approach, technical skills, and best practice taught at Flying Fish.
For a complete training programme, leading to Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean qualification, please search again and select one of our Yachtmaster/Master of Yachts Traineeships.
The course is eligible for UK Armed Forces resettlement funding for service leavers.
Periods of training ashore in Cowes alternate with time spent living and learning on board our sailing yachts. You visit the main ports in the Solent and some quiet hideaway anchorages, as well as making trips along England's South Coast or across to France and the Channel Islands. Towards the end of the course you will experience working in a watch system.
The shorebased syllabus in Part 1 includes: Vessel familiarisation / Navigation and pilotage/ Rules and regulations / Safety and seamanship / Food safety and hygiene on board / Basic yacht maintenance / Diesel engine maintenance / Marine radio techniques / Weather forecasting. You will also complete five days of STCW95 Basic Safety Training which includes: Simulated emergencies / First aid at sea / Sea survival techiques / Safety and social responsibility / Fire prevention and fire fighting.
On completing Part 1 you will be an accomplished crew member with a practical understanding of the principles of sailing a yacht. You will be growing confident in the role of skipper in sheltered waters and have experienced some short offshore passages. You will also have achieved a list of useful qualifications, including the radio operator and first aid certificates required to enter an RYA Yachtmaster exam, and STCW95 certificates to support your commercial endorsement as Master of Yachts 200gt.
