This spectacular annual yacht race is the largest in the world with over 1,800 boats competing. The race around the Isle of Wight attracts every type of sailor and boat from professional crew on 120ft Maxis to friends and families in dinghies and folk boats.
We start with a training session on Friday, the day before the race. There is a morning briefing, to establish crew roles, then we go afloat for a shakedown sail to get to grips with speedy tacking, smooth gybes and efficient spinnaker handling.
Dinner is in the pub, to discuss tactics and plan the start. Accommodation on the boat is included for Friday night. Saturday is the race itself - and we wake you early in the morning to head out for the start line.
The 60 mile chase starts and finishes on the Royal Yacht Squadron line in Cowes and the course takes you west out of the Solent and into the English Channel, through the Needles, past St Catherine's Point, round No Man's Land Fort and on to an exciting dash to the finish.
Flying Fish enters its Beneteau 40.7s chosen for speed and their ability to manoueuvre swiftly in and out of the enormous fleet. This is a great opportunity for some highly competitive match racing between the 40.7s.
If you prefer to sleep ashore in comfort, accommodation is also available at Point Cottages on Friday and Saturday night. For more information about Cowes and the Cottages please use the Destinations link above left.
