Year Out Group top tips for planning a gap year

gap year top tipAs a member of the UK's Year Out Group Flying Fish adheres to a Code of Practice to ensure the well-being of young people on a structured gap year or year out overseas.
Read the Year Out Group Code of Practice >>

At Flying Fish we believe your gap year should be fun as well as educational. You will face a personal challenge during your training course and subsequent work experience - and you'll get the most out of it if you have prepared yourself. Here are our top tips for planning a year out:

  1. Design your gap year in outline before applying for university. Admissions tutors will be impressed by a thought-out plan.
  2. What's most important to you - travel or work experience? You can be flexible with travel plans but you must research job opportunities in advance. Chcek out today's gap year jobs at Flying Fish Recruitment >>
  3. Who do you know who's been there before? Flying Fish can put you in touch with someone just arrived back in the UK if you like.
  4. Sort out the admin in plenty of time - air tickets, visas, insurance, jabs for some destinations.
  5. Who is in charge of your affairs while you're away? There will be university forms to fill and letters to answer.
  6. What have you forgotten? As a Year Out Group member organisation Flying Fish recommends Britain's Foreign Office campaign Know before you go >>
  7. Allow plenty of time to settle back home on your return after your year out. You'll need time to organise accommodation and everything else for uni - and don't be surprised by a mild case of post-trip blues while you readjust.
  8. Find courses for an exciting gap year with Year Out Group member organisation Flying Fish >>
