A day in the life of a trainee surf instructor in Sydney
Trainee surf instructors are making waves of their own, with a new batch of freshly qualified Surf Instructors and Lifeguards just graduated from Flying Fish in Sydney.
Let's jump in and take a closer look at what the Surf Instructor Traineeship students get up to in a day's adventure.
Kyle Belmont took part in the Instructor Traineeship. He described his experiences:
You are woken to the sound and smell of a board being waxed. Manly Beach is a short walk from the student house; the smell of salt air mixes with the sound of waves crashing …surfs up!
The rest of the housemates are up early taking advantage of the early morning surf at Manly Beach.
Surf's up for Kyle
Manly Promenade comes to life with morning fitness fanatics. Our group heads back to the house for breakfast, laughing over stories of epic waves from the morning session. Chatter carries on between us as we make our way down to the surf school; where we meet our coach James who briefs us on the day's activities.
Then we go in search of the best waves on the peninsular, and the morning is occupied with personal surf training. Feedback from our expert coaches makes you realise your unlimited potential!
After lunch, theory begins on the functions of surf board design, this really helps your understanding of board performance and surfing manoeuvres. Following this we put our theory to the test with some free surf time…surfs up!
As the sky turns pink with the late afternoon, the day is not over as we head to Manly's Olympic swimming pool for swim training or circuit training on Manly Beach.
Exhausted with a rumbling stomach but feeling completely satisfied we return back home to chow and plan the night's social agenda!
Kyle completed his course with Flying Fish, then headed off to Central America to teach surfing in Panama.
