Work as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor and dive the world
Working in recruitment at Flying Fish UK I am often asked about people's job prospects after qualifying on an instructor course.
Chloe recently wrote in to our message board here at flyingfishonline.com:
"I am interested in becoming a diving instructor and I am considering applying for your Pro Dive Traineeship in Egypt and Australia. I was wondering if I may have difficulty in finding work once qualifed as I only speak English. I'm aware that many diving schools like to employ instructors who speak at least two languages."
Of course the answer is that English is the common language of tourism throughout the world and Chloe should have no trouble finding work as long as she is flexible with her travel plans.
Her message soon attracted lots of answers.
Hannah wrote: "I am working as a diving instructor in Costa Rica, having spent two years from 2004 in Cyprus. If you want to be an instructor then don't let the language thing hold you back. I became an instructor with only English. PS There are loads of manta rays around right now, completely out of season, and i snorkelled with my first whale shark yesterday!"
Lee followed with: "Like you I only speak English. Since qualifying in 2004 I have been employed in Malta, Thailand and the UK almost constantly. It is a definite advantage to be able to list another language, but I wasn't put off with adverts asking for 2 languages and still applied."
And Mike sent in this: "I have worked as an instructor in Australia, Thailand and Europe. I started diving in Mexico at 12 years old and loved it. In the Maldives I was inspired by my dive instructor and was determined to become one. It was the best decision I ever made. What I learned and experieced was wonderful. I am now at University studying Ocean Exploration on a three year degree course and scuba diving is an important part of the course. I had a brilliant time in Australia with Flying Fish and my mum trusted them like Marks & Spencers or John Lewis. Go for it!"
