Working in the superyacht industry

To work in the marine industry today, you need to make yourself as versatile as possible.   But what does that really mean?

"The most crucial aspect to being versatile is certification" says Dockwalk's  careers expert, Amy Beavers.  "While everyone has to back up what they have on paper with actual skill and competence once they get the job, if you don't have the paper, you won't even get the interview.

"RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or the IYT Master of Yachts certification is fast becoming an important qualification for deck crew working within the superyacht industry" confirms Dockwalk's Matt Brown.   "If you think you only need an STCW ticket to find a job as a deckhand, then think again. Many yachts require that all their deck crew hold a Yachtmaster certificate before they can be considered for employment."

"STCW compliance is a compulsory requirement for crew on yachts over 24 meters and the minimum entry ticket to set foot on board" says Amanda Ribbins at Flying Fish.   "In the current climate it's important to remember that there are lots of people trying to get the same jobs as you, so it's worth thinking about what other certificates you can get to make you stand out from the crowd."

If you're an unqualified deck hand for example, have you got an RYA Day Skipper ticket so that you qualify for a Yacht Rating?   Consider taking a Powerboat Level 2 course so that you can drive the tender?  If you're looking for an interior role, have you got skills in the hospitality industry that will set you apart from your competitors?

Qualified as an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore/Master of Yachts 200gt?  Consider upgrading to an unrestricted ticket -  Yachtmaster Ocean - so you're not confined to certain areas of operation.

"There are many ways to increase your value in any market, but when times are tough, we must be prepared to make ourselves as secure in our jobs as possible by being as versatile as possible" concludes Beavers.

"The many of you who have  been working without any time off to improve your qualifications may find yourselves in a difficult position.   This can be changed and you probably have the sea time now to advance.  When is there a better time to focus on yourself, go back to "school" and get some qualifications solidly listed on your CV?"
