Yachtmasters work as coxswains in Sydney
Flying Fish Yachtmaster graduates are now working as coxswains in Sydney
New South Wales Maritime has just agreed new procedures for the recognition of Yachmaster Certificates creating hundreds of new job options for Flying Fish graduates in Australia.
If you're a holder of a Yachtmaster Certificate issued by the Royal Yachting Association or Yachting Australia, with an STCW endorsement, you may now apply to have your certificate recognised as the equivalent of a Coxswain Certificate.
The new regulations recognise the very high standard of training involved to qualify as an RYA or YA Yachtmaster.
A Coxswain Certificate allows you to act as the master or engineer on commercial vessels up to 12 metres in length and operating up to 15 miles from the coast.
"This is great news for our Yachtmasters" confirms Flying Fish MD, Andy Fairclough. "It really has opened up the job opportunities for work on Sydney Harbour - not least in the charter market where demand for skippers is very high." (Working visas are stil required for non nationals.)
All Flying Fish Yachmaster traineeships include STCW'95 Basic Safety Training certification.
(If you are the holder of an RYA or YA Yachtmaster Certificate - Offshore or Ocean - but do not have your STCW'95 Basic Safety Training Certificates, you must complete an approved coxswain training course, meet NSW Maritime medical and eyesight standards, provide a current senior first aid certificate and pass a NSW Maritime assessment)
