Surf instructor

surf instructorThe worldwide job market for surf instructors is expanding. Surf lessons are very profitable for the school organising them so every school is keen to exploit their potential.

The instructor's lifestyle is brilliant. You work in the sunshine and have plenty of time to improve your own skills and enjoy your favourite sport. You won't earn a fortune to start with -  but if you spend all day on the
beach that's no worries.

You need professional qualifications in beach lifesaving and as a surf instructor - and that's where Flying Fish can help. To maximise your job opportunities in the surf we recommend combining surfing with windsurfing one of our Surf/Windsurf/Lifesaving Traineeships >>

Your gameplan for work as a surf instructor
After you qualify with Flying Fish in Sydney, we recommend trying for immediate work with a Sydney surf school or NSW surf adventure company. These jobs are seldom advertised but you are well placed to hear about them on the grapevine. If you aren't elighible for work in Australia because of visa restrictions you can get teaching practice on our Pro Surf Instructor Development programme >>

Before you start training, prepare a CV/resume with the qualifications you expect to achieve. Apply for jobs advertised on this site and start networking as soon as you begin your course. There are usually more jobs than applicants so there is no excuse not to get hired!

What will you earn and who are the employers?
The surf industry is not well structured! There are are no major employers to approach in advance but that need not be a barrier to you getting work. Wherever the surf is good you'll find a surf school. The work appeals to people who are travelling in search of the perfect wave, so job vacancies are frequent. You can expect to earn about AUD 25 an hour in Australia, with a likely maximum of AUD 150 a day.

The next step
After working a season in Australia you’ll want to spread your wings. There's no surf in the Mediterranean but Portugal, Spain and SW France have great surf on their Atlantic coasts.
