Jon, 28, joined the Yachtmaster Traineship with the vague idea of a career change in mind. Since then, things have really moved on. Jon describes what happened next:
Before the course I'd sailed a little but was largely unaware of decisions and the forces at play behind those relaxing days afloat. Now it's not such a big mystery after all - and it's a lot more fun when you know which 'piece of string' you're supposed to be pulling on!
A career on the water
The experience suited me down to the ground, and proved to be so enjoyable, that a career on the water was the only way forward.
After some research I found the best way for me to gain more commercial qualifications and experience was to get graduate entry as a Deck Officer in the Merchant Navy. This I am now doing through a sponsored degree course in Southampton.
My ambitions are along the lines of Ship's Captain and Master Mariner in due course, but always with that idyllic dream of one day skippering a superyacht in some exotic location ........ well someone's got to do it ...
