Before I joined the course I worked in the United States as the operations manager for a residential conference centre.
When my visa finished so I returned to the UK. It was there that I had to make the decision of what I really wanted to do.
I knew that a job behind a desk was not for me and that I really enjoyed being on or around the water.
I had some experience sailing so I went online and spent a few weeks researching what opportunities were out there. I came across Flying Fish, contacted them and found the ideal course for me, the Yachtmaster Pro Traineeship plus RYA Cruising Instructor.
My course started in Cowes. Then the highlight of the course arrived: three months sailing in Australia.
It was fantastic! The weather was good (including the bad weather), the boats were excellent and the instruction was pitched at just the right level.
Hey, we saw dolphins every night offshore.
A high point for me was the excitement of the spinnaker race training week. Then I loved being able to use those skills, racing at the local Sydney yacht club on the weekend.
Flying Fish has given me a complete rounded sailing experience, so to maximise my chances of employment.
Straight into work
I returned to the UK and went straight into work as a freelance skipper and cruising instructor.
