Sam, 18, joined the Flying Fish Dinghy Sail/Windsurf Instructor Traineeship in Sydney.
Following the course he stayed in Sydney to work at Northside Sailing School, with a job offer from Mark Warner in the bag for the following summer.
In Sam's own words: After finishing school I decided to take a gap year before going to Plymouth University for a degree in Marine Sports Technology. I had sailed dinghies for seven years before joining Flying Fish and so it seemed logical to try and get my instructors qualification to teach during my university holidays.
I choose Australia as my training location as I wanted to be somewhere warm and I had always dreamed of going there. The course was challenging and the learning curve was really steep, I went from a complete beginner at windsurfing to confidently sailing with a 7 metre sail in really windy conditions!
The highlight of the dinghy course was learning to sail on the trapeze while helming on my own.
I have been teaching children at a sailing school which has really improved my confidence and sailing knowledge.
The social scene in Sydney has been fantastic. I have met friends for life on the course and had many great nights in the local bars.
I want to recommend Flying Fish to all my friends now; once you start the course you won't look back!
