How to get a STCW 95 certificate

7 June 2016

If you looking for a new career and fancy travelling around on a superyacht, serving the rich and famous, then you’re going to need STCW 95 certificate.

Even if you’re planning to work on a smaller vessel, your captain may require you to be trained in the basics, which is exactly what STCW 95 covers.

Obtaining the certificate will open up a range of career opportunities in the yachting industry, so if you’re thinking about jumping ship and heading to sunnier locales, here’s all you need to know about STCW 95.

What qualifications do I need to be awarded the STCW 95 certificate?

You’ll need to complete five different modules in order to receive the certificate. They are:

  • Personal safety and social responsibilities
  • Firefighting and fire prevention
  • Elementary first aid
  • Personal survival techniques
  • Proficiency in security awareness

You can choose to take each module separately - most take between a day and half a day to complete - or you can get them all done in just a week. The latter option allows you to get your STCW 95 certificate as soon as possible, which means you can start searching for that dream job!

Are there any pre-course requirements?

No, just make sure you bring an up to date photo ID with you before you begin the course. That said, it is wise to have previous sailing experience. In the unlikely circumstance that you’ve never been on a yacht before, you should make sure you do go on one before booking the training course. You need to ensure you have the constitution to work at sea!

How long is a STCW 95 certification valid for?

You will need to attend a refresher course every five years. If you don’t, you will lose the certification and therefore your job. This is why you must book your refresher course as far in advance as possible – do it last-minute and you may not be able to complete it before you certificate expires.

Once I have the certificate, what’s next?

You could start looking for a job, but it’s recommended that your further your education beforehand. Doing so will increase your chances of securing a great role aboard a superyacht. If you want an interior crew role, you’ll need to take the STCW Superyacht Interior Crew Training course, which takes just two weeks to complete. You’ll learn everything from food hygiene and general housekeeping, to cocktail making and wine appreciation – skills that will be invaluable on-board a superyacht!

Prefer to become the member of a deck crew? Then our STCW Superyacht Deck Crew Training course is ideal. It covers all the qualifications you need, including a radio operator’s licence and certificate to drive a small powerboat. Having an understanding of the superyacht industry on a practical level is also vital.

If you want to boost your employment chances even further, or you plan to move up in the industry as quickly as possible, completing a RYA Yachtmaster course will put you ahead of the competition. No matter how much experience you have, the course will teach you a lot and help you secure the job role that you desire.

Obtaining your STCW 95 certificate is the first step towards working on commercial vessels across the world. Put in the hard work and before you know it you’ll be making cocktails for A-list celebrities in the middle of Caribbean, enjoying exclusive parties and travelling to places you never would have visited otherwise. Plus, the pay is pretty good too! If you’d like to know anything about any of our courses, please don’t hesitate to contact us – we’re more than happy to answer your questions.
