Overview

STCW Basic Training Course is a requirement for anybody looking to work at sea on commercial vessels, including Superyachts.

Why do I need STCW Basic Safety Training?

STCW are compulsory safety qualifications required by crew working on large vessels over 24m in length. Although there is no legal requirement to hold STCW certificates on vessels of less than 24m, many employers and professional skippers expect their crew to have STCW certificates to work on these smaller boats.

STCW Basic Safety Training was introduced in 1978 to promote safety at sea. STCW has been through many changes over the years. For a long time the course was known as STCW 95 and recent changes in legislation has seen the code updated to STCW 2010.

Flying Fish is recognised by the MCA to deliver the latest STCW 2010 qualifications. We have been training customers for over 10 years, with great success. If you are new to the industry then you may find our article on how to get an STCW certificate interesting.

What’s covered?

This 6-day course covers the 5 elements that make up STCW 2010. These include:

  1. 2.5 day Fire Fighting Course
  2. 0.5 day Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (PSSR)
  3. 0.5 day Proficiency in Security awareness (PSA)
  4. 1 day Sea Survival Course
  5. 1 day Elementary first aid

Most of the training you will complete is practical hands-on training. You will learn a lot of new skills and at the end of the week have the knowledge and practical experience to respond to an emergency onboard.

Where to stay

If you choose our accommodation option, the Flying Fish crew houses in Cowes are comfortable and centrally located. Just a 2 minute walk to the town and our training centre, this will take the stress out of finding your own accommodation.

Using our self catering accommodation costs £210 for the duration of the course.

New to the Superyacht industry?

If you don’t have much experience or many qualifications in the Yachting industry, then please read Charlotte’s journey. You may want to consider getting some more experience by joining our Superyacht Deckhand or Steward/ess Course.

If you are new to the Maritime industry and don’t have experience working on Superyachts then you will benefit by gaining extra knowledge to stay above the rest.

Powerboat Level 2 is a legal requirement to drive the yacht tenders so, for deckhands, this is a must.

For those looking to gain more experience and get that edge, we recommend our Superyacht Deckhand or Steward/ess courses.
