STCW Basic Safety Training Certificates are a requirement for anybody looking to work at sea on commercial vessels, including Superyachts.
STCW stands for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. It sets the international legal minimum standards for those working at sea on ships or Superyachts. It is recognised around the world to give confidence that nations signed up to the agreement know that crew have been trained to a known standard ensuring that the Seafarer meets a set of specific safety requirements.
STCW Basic Safety Training is a compulsory qualification for crew working on Superyachts and all vessels over 24 metres long. Although there is no legal requirement to hold STCW certificates on vessels of less than 24m, many employers and professional skippers expect their crew to have STCW certificates to work on smaller boats.
The course covers all the elements for a basic understanding of staying safe at sea. It also offers practical, safe examples to help individuals learn how to handle different types of emergencies at sea.
Flying Fish include Proficiency in Security Awareness course as part of our STCW Basic Safety Training course which is required by all new crew entering the maritime industry.

Pre-requisite experience and qualifications
There are no formal pre-course requirements but you must be 17 to enrol onto this course. Fire fighting and Personal Survival are physically demanding and require a good level of fitness. We recommend that all customers complete an ENG 1 medical or equivalent medical before enrolling onto this course. If you have concerns over your fitness then please contact Flying Fish.
Over the week, you will cover these courses:
STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (STCW A-VI/1-2)
If you are new to the Maritime industry and don’t have experience working on Superyachts then you will benefit by gaining extra knowledge to stay above the rest.
Powerboat Level 2 is a legal requirement to drive the yacht tenders so, for deck hands, this is a must.
For those looking to gain more experience and get that edge, we recommend our Superyacht Deck or Interior Training courses.
