The Dinghy Instructor course combines intensive skills, coaching on the water with theory, training to develop your knowledge and instructional skills. The course will teach you all that you need to know, to become a competent RYA Dinghy Instructor and will prepare you for work as a professional or club Dinghy Instructor.

The Dinghy Instructors course

Our Dinghy instructors course is run over six weeks, in Greece. You will start with the basics of Dinghy sailing to familiarise you with the the key elements of sailing and before you know it you will be flying a spinnaker, surfing downwind.

Becoming a Dinghy instructor not only leads to a professional qualification but provides leadership, communication and people skills that will see you develop as a person as well as an instructor.

What makes our Dinghy instructors course so popular is the location, weather, expert tuition and all the additional activities that you don’t get on a traditional Dinghy instructors course. Customers enjoy an early morning mountain bike ride, take out one of the Stand up paddle board for a morning paddle, join in with our fitness sessions or go for a swim before the days training begins.

Customers range from 18 to 50 plus, all bringing different skills and experiences to the course. You will make life long friends and may end up working together on a beach at a holiday resort teaching Dinghy sailing.

Life off the water is just as exciting…when the sun goes down,Vassiliki comes alive! The Club Vass and Wildwind BBQs entertainment shows are legendary. The whole of Vassiliki is in holiday mode during the summer months and with so many bars and ‘tavernas’ to choose from, you are guaranteed to have fantastic nights out with like-minded people.

Our instructors are all professional windsurfers and Dinghy instructors. They are very experienced and passionate about their sport.

Flights and Accommodation

Flying Fish will organise you flights, transfers to resort and accommodation. If you choose to say with us we will accommodate you in the famous Fish House,  (where all the Fish stay) introduce you to the lovely town of Vassiliki and allow you to settle in before training begins the following day.

When you graduate

Flying Fish graduates have such a fantastic time that many choose not to come home, instead they spend the season in Greece working for one of the holiday companies who provide holidays in the beautiful Greek Islands.

Pre-requisite experience and qualifications

There are no formal pre-course requirements, just a desire to be on the water!

  • You need to be 18 years of age (if you are 17 we require a parent or guardian in resort)
  • Before the final week of your course you will need to join the RYA

Full itinerary

Our schedule has you training 6 days a week. In the mornings you have the opportunity to join guided mountain bike rides, Stand up Paddleboarding (SUP), go for a swim or relax in the club before training begins at 10am each day.  After 5pm there are many options for sundown activities, this is when the social scene comes alive!

Weeks 1 and 2: Skills Training 

  • Learn to sail – we teach you how to sail a dinghy on your own or as part of a crew. You will learn how to sail effectively and develop those all important seamanship and racing skills.
  • Theory, weather, tides, rules of sailing, equipment, rigging and de-rigging and that all important – boat maintenance.
  • Each afternoon when the wind increases, you will get to experience sailing on high-performance dinghies using spinnakers with one of our expert instructors.
  • By the end of the two weeks, you will be at RYA Level 3 standard.

Weeks 3 and 4: Instructor Skills Development 

  • RYA Powerboat level 2 and Rescue Training.
  • RYA First Aid Training with scenarios.
  • Personal sailing tuition working towards the advanced modules.
  • Sail away trips.
  • Video Coaching.
  • High Wind Blasting.
  • Racing and Race Coaching.

Week 5: Instructor Preparation Week 

  • RYA Safe and Fun Course.
  • Learning styles and teaching skills.
  • Instructor Demo Skills.
  • Practice presentations, questionnaires and feedback.
  • Close quarters sailing and boat handling.
  • Pre entry Sailing Assessment.

Week 6: 

During this week, an RYA appointed Dinghy Coach/assessor will develop your on water teaching ability and evaluate your skills and teaching techniques.  All students will be given the opportunity to deliver presentations and practical sessions with feedback. After this week, students will be competent delivering all components of the RYA Dinghy syllabus.
