Overview

The Intermediate Windsurfing Instructors course (upgrade) is a two-week programme for experienced RYA Start Windsurfing instructors who are looking to improve personal sailing and teaching skills.

Course programme

The Intermediate Instructors course is run at our high wind windsurfing centre at Club Vassi, Greece. Being a busy centre, you will see instructors of all levels running practical and land based training sessions. The standard of windsurfing is very high and you will be able to see how these experienced instructors run their courses.

We are blessed with fantastic conditions and warm water so you will find that you pick up the more advanced skills quickly. You are also very fortunate to have all the latest boards and sails rigged up and ready to go, for sitting on the beach you can be on the water in a matter of minutes.

The Intermediate Instructors ticket will be awarded Planing or Non-Planing. Your result depends on your ability to perform and instruct Planing techniques.

All our Windsurfing instructor courses is run at Club Vass, Vassiliki, Greece. Vassiliki bay is world famous for the sailing conditions. With light winds and flat sea in the morning, ideal for instructor Intermediate Instructor training skills. The afternoon brings the cross-shore which kicks in around 3:00pm, where you will practice high wind sailing techniques.

If you are an early riser you will be able to join guided mountain bike rides, fitness sessions or take a morning swim in the beautiful clear waters of Vasiliki bay. At the end of a training day, there will be time to unwind and take time out for some personal windsurfing.

In the evening, Vasiliki’s nightlife kicks in. Vass is a busy town full of bars and restaurants where you find friendly, like-minded people enjoying a cool beer chatting about the day’s activities

Accommodation is provided in a local self catering crew House in the heart of Vassiliki, know to locals as the Fish House. The Fish House is only a ten-minute walk from the training centre.

Pre-requisite experience and qualifications

You must be a qualified RYA Start Windsurfing Instructor with significant coaching experience and at least 50 hours logged. Your personal windsurfing ability enables you to demonstrate advanced technique on demand.

You must hold an Intermediate planing personal certificate with Beach Start and Non-Planing Carve Gybe clinics, a RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate, and valid First aid certificate. Please see the RYA’s list of approved First Aid certificates.

To become an instructor, you must be a member of the RYA


Full itinerary

Week 1

The first week is designed to improve your personal sailing and teaching/coaching skills. One of our RYA windsurfing Trainers will assess your skills then design a training plan that enhance your skills. The goal is to improve your personal sailing and prepare you for the Intermediate Instructors course

Week 2

The Intermediate Instructors course is 4 days long, no moderation is required. Candidates are continually assessed during the course on their personal sailing ability.

You will be asked to demonstrate your ability to deliver Intermediate teaching methods using the RYA’s Fastfwd scheme, and show your powerboat rescue techniques in light and windy conditions.

The Trainer will assess your presentation techniques and theory knowledge to the required standard. You will also demonstrate how to use the simulator to best effect.

At the end of the 4-day course, your trainer will issue you with an Intermediate Instructors ticket, planing or non-planing, if you have met the required criteria.
