This live-aboard course provides a comprehensive introduction to yachting and leads to a RYA Competent Crew certificate. The course is designed for novice sailors who would like to become useful and active crew members.

Course programme

As the name suggests, this five-day course will show you what you need to know to become a handy crew member on a sailing yacht. You will learn the principals of sailing, how the boat works, essential boat handling skills, seamanship, knots and terminology.

The week will be broken into short passages and skills and drills; you will explore different ports or anchorages during the week.

By the end of the week, you will be able to steer the yacht, trim the sails and have the confidence and ability to join a sailing yacht as a useful crew member.

The RYA Competent Crew course is a great way to meet new people, enjoy the fresh sea air, and go to some new places in the company of great people.

Pre-requisite experience and qualifications

You must be 18 years old to join this course in Australia. This course is designed for beginners so no practical experience is needed. All students are required to secure travel insurance for the duration of their training.

Full itinerary

The 5-day training course introduces you to personal safety, sailing skills, terminology, seamanship, helming and navigation. The course structure depends on the weather and tides, however, a typical course would run as follows:

Day 1

Course brief, meet your crew and instructor, safety brief, terminology, systems and routines to ensure the boat runs smoothly.

Basic sail handling, reefing, knots, manners and customs. Lots of sailing to get used to the boat, focusing on the points of sail.

Day 2

Safety equipment onboard, engine checks, knots, intro to chart work and GPS. Sailing exercises including MOB.

Day 3

How to use a dinghy, mooring exercises, helming, maintenance tasks, anchoring and more sailing.

Day 4

Pilotage and passage planning, sailing exercises, sail trim, helming, picking up mooring buoys, MOB.

Day 5

Sailing exercises, reefing, sail trim, knots, sail back to the departure port. End with a debrief.
