RYA Yachtmaster courses
Yachtmaster certificates are issued by the Royal Yachting Asssociation (RYA) under the authority of the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
The Yachtmaster certificate is the entry level qualification for commercial captains and a goal for many recreational skippers.
RYA Yachtmaster qualifications are well respected throughout the world.
Start as a beginner
Even a beginner can pass a Yachtmaster exam in a remarkably short period with Flying Fish.
Or join as an experienced sailor
Whatever your previous experience, we guarantee to improve your knowledge and skills.
Yachtmaster Coastal is the qualification for skippers who will stay within 20 miles of port, sailing by day in fine weather.
This certificate is attainable on all our Yachtmaster traineeships in the UK and Australia.
Yachtmaster Offshore is the certificate you need to take command of a yacht on passages up to 150 miles from a safe haven.
Yachtmaster Ocean is awarded to skippers whose knowledge and experience equips them to undertake ocean passages, unrestricted by distance.
Achieve your Ocean certificate on a Yachtmaster Ocean Traineeship at Flying Fish.
Certificates of competence
Every RYA Yachtmaster certificate is proof of competence on board and a qualification to take command of a vessel up to 200gt. Yachtmaster Offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean qualifications also act as passports to worldwide employment opportunities.
MCA Master (Code Vessels less than 200gt)
Additionally, the MCA offers direct oral examination for an internationally recognised Master 200gt Certificate of Competency (CoC).
Candidates for the MCA exam must already hold a Yachtmaster Offshore or Yachtmaster Ocean qualification. Although technically these RYA Yachtmaster qualifications are also approved for international use, in practice some jurisdictions favour a CoC issued direct by the MCA.
As the holder of an MCA Master 200gt CoC you will be qualified to take command of any vessel up to 200gt.
Vessels greater than 200gt
As you progress beyond 200gt you leave the RYA behind.
Your education ashore now takes place at MCA approved training establishments and certification is the direct responsibility of the MCA.
