Hamilton Island, QLD

Hamilton Island

Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island in the beautiful Whitsundays, located just off Australia's Queensland coast. It lies on the same tropical latitude as Honolulu in the northern hemisphere and Mauritius in the south and has a year round warm tropical climate with an average temperature of 27°C.

The highlight of every Australian yachtsman's sailing calendar is the Hamilton Island Race Week, held every August. At this time of year, the Whitsunday Islands are spectacular, with sparkling, crystal clear water and a steady breeze. This is one of the world's most breathtaking settings for a regatta. This is also the time that the islands are home to thousands of humpback whales who migrate north to give birth in this area – and it’s not uncommon to be accompanied by whales while racing.
