Making Tax Digital (MTD) is changing how seafarers with a rental property or self-employed work report their income.
Instead of one tax return a year, HMRC now wants an update every three months, plus your year-end return. It doesn’t mean paying tax every quarter. It’s just a report you’re now legally required to send.
It sounds like more admin, but once you’re set up, we take care of all of it, so nothing gets missed while you’re away.
Our MTD service is run by Fiona (MAAT), a qualified accountant with over 20 years’ experience. Fiona specialises in Seafarers Earning Deductions and knows how to fit MTD around life at sea.
Every MTD client starts with a one-to-one call with Fiona. She’ll check whether MTD applies to you, explain what happens next and get you set up.
Claiming Seafarers Earning Deduction is simple. Log your trips in and out of the UK and add your income details in your Flying Fish Tax account.
Fiona checks your Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction eligibility, prepares your return and files it with HMRC.
The only difference is that your self-employed and property income is already done, from your quarterly MTD updates.
MTD applies if your self-employed and property income, added together and before expenses, is over the threshold:
From 6 April 2026: over £50,000
From 6 April 2027: over £30,000
From 6 April 2028: over £20,000
Your pay at sea doesn’t count. It’s only income from self-employment and property.
HMRC uses your tax return from two years earlier. So if your 2025/26 return shows over £30,000, you start in April 2027.
From setup to your year-end return, we handle the lot. Here’s everything you get.

We specialise in tax for seafarers, including superyacht crew, cruise ship crew, commercial shipping and people working in oil and gas. Our MTD service is for seafarers who also have self-employed or property income in the UK over the MTD threshold, and want it handled for them while they’re at sea.
It’s HMRC’s new way of reporting self-employed and property income. Instead of reporting it once a year, you send HMRC a short update every three months showing what came in and what you spent. You don’t pay any tax with these updates. At the end of the year, you still do your tax return as normal, which is where your sea pay and Seafarers’ Earnings Deduction go.
Only if you have self-employed or property income in the UK over the threshold. Add both together, before expenses. If you’re not sure, book a call and we will check for you.
These are the thresholds:
From 6 April 2026: over £50,000
From 6 April 2027: over £30,000
From 6 April 2028: over £20,000
This is this biggest misconception with Making Tax Digital and the answer is no. Quarterly updates are just reports. You pay your tax after your year-end return, the same as now.
Each quarterly update is due about a month after the quarter ends:
Your tax return (Final Declaration) is due by 31 January after the end of the tax year, and that’s when you pay any tax, the same as now.
You don’t need to remember any of these. We will keep track and send you each update to approve in good time.
Your quarterly updates are built from your bank feed. When your self-employed and property income each have their own account, we can see exactly what came in and went out, without picking through your personal spending. That keeps your updates accurate and your fees down.
If you’d rather not open a separate account, we’ll talk you through your options on your call. Generally, it means working through your transactions with you to separate business income and expenses from personal spending, which takes longer and comes with a higher fee.
Your bank will ask you to reconnect every 90 days. It only takes a minute, but it’s easy to miss at sea, so act on it as soon as it pops up. Fiona also checks your feed before each quarter ends. If it has dropped, reconnect when you’re back in signal, or send us a bank statement and we’ll fill the gap.
