Overview
The Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Course is a one-day, classroom-based training that forms part of the STCW Basic Safety Training package, the mandatory set of qualifications required before you can work at sea commercially, including on Superyachts.
What is PSSR?
PSSR stands for Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities. It is designed to give you a practical introduction to life and work onboard a vessel: how to stay safe, how to work effectively as part of a crew, and what is expected of you as a professional seafarer.
The STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities Course is one of five mandatory modules within the STCW Basic Safety Training programme. Where other STCW modules focus on areas such as firefighting or sea survival, PSSR covers the human side of working onboard: safe working habits, teamwork, communication and your responsibilities to both your colleagues and the environment.
It is required for anyone joining a commercial vessel, whether that is a Superyacht, a cruise ship or a cargo vessel.
Course information
This classroom-based day of training covers a range of topics designed to prepare you for the realities of working onboard a professional vessel.
By the end of the course, you will understand how vessels operate as working environments and what is expected of you as part of a crew.
Topics covered include:
- Complying with emergency procedures onboard a vessel
- Safe working practices and accident prevention
- Shipboard organisational structure and chain of command
- Understanding orders and communication onboard
- Contributing to effective working relationships within a crew
- Employment conditions and your responsibilities as a seafarer
- Preventing pollution of the marine environment
- Awareness of fatigue and personal wellbeing
- Respectful behaviour onboard, including awareness of harassment and unacceptable conduct
The final topic reflects updated MCA guidance around professional conduct at sea. Working onboard a vessel means living and working in close proximity with your crewmates, often for extended periods. The PSSR course introduces the responsibilities all seafarers share in maintaining a safe, professional, and respectful working environment onboard.
- MCA approved PSSR certificate

There are no formal pre-course requirements but you must be 18 to enrol on this course.
