If you are working as a Seafarer onboard a ship, or are returning to sea and completed your STCW Basic Safety Training Course more than five years ago, then the STCW Refresher Course is for you.
If you hold Personal Survival Techniques (PST) and Fire Fighting (FP&FF) then as of 1st January 2017, you must have evidence of having completed an STCW updated training course within the last five years.
The new STCW Refresher Course was introduced as part of the 2010 STCW Manila amendments to the STCW convention. These changes came about because it was recognised that Seafarers do not have the opportunity, as part of monthly drills, to practice tackling real fires or launch life rafts, therefore updated training of these practical skills was needed.
Where to stay
If you choose our accommodation option, the Flying Fish crew houses in Cowes are comfortable and centrally located. Just a 2 minute walk to the town and our training centre, this will take the stress out of finding your own accommodation.
Using our self catering accommodation costs £220 for the duration of the course.
STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (2 days)
We will refresh your knowledge on the different types of fire fighting equipment found onboard, BA gear and casualty recovery in a smoke-filled compartment. You will complete a live fire exercise and use various types of fire extinguishers.
STCW Personal Survival Techniques (1 Day)
You will get the chance to go back to the pool and get into the life raft. We will update you with changes, techniques and equipment since your last Sea Survival Course.
- Safety equipment, training and certification.

Day 1: Briefing at 16:00 before being shown to your Flying Fish accommodation in Cowes. If you have chosen not to stay in Flying Fish accommodation then you can request to arrive the following day at 08:30 ready for your course. Your briefing will then take place in the first break of the day.
Days 2 and 3: Two days of Fire Fighting which includes all the practical skills you would have completed during your first STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting course. We will update you on the latest techniques, equipment and procedures. You will refresh both theory and practical skills needed to use fire fighting equipment to reduce fire to a safe and controlled state. You will learn how fires at sea are caused and the precautions needed to minimise the risk to life.
Day 5: The Personal Survival Techniques course will refresh all the skills you practiced in your initial STCW Basic Safety Training. The course includes practical exercises in the swimming pool where you will recap how to launch a life raft, update survival techniques and how to use the latest survival equipment.
If you are unable to complete both elements then you are able to complete Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting on one date then come back to complete your Personal Survival Techniques on another date.
Whilst it is not compulsory for those working on Superyachts or commercial ships, holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore or Ocean Certificate of Competence who are working as an RYA Instructor are required to update their First Aid every three years.
