If you are working as a Seafarer onboard a ship, or are returning to sea and completed your STCW Basic Safety Training Course more than five years ago, then the STCW Refresher Course is for you.

If you hold Personal Survival Techniques (PST) and Fire Fighting (FP&FF) then as of 1st January 2017, you must have evidence of having completed an STCW updated training course within the last five years.

The new STCW Refresher Course was introduced as part of the 2010 STCW Manila amendments to the STCW convention. These changes came about because it was recognised that Seafarers do not have the opportunity, as part of monthly drills, to practice tackling real fires or launch life rafts, therefore updated training of these practical skills was needed.

Flying Fish is recognised by the MCA to deliver the  STCW 2010 Basic Safety Training course.  The course complies with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW code

Where to stay

If you choose our accommodation option, the Flying Fish crew houses in Cowes are comfortable and centrally located. Just a 2-minute walk to the town and our training centre, this will take the stress out of finding your own accommodation.

Using our self-catering accommodation costs £245 for the duration of the course.

Course Programme:

STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (2.5 days)

We will refresh your knowledge on the different types of fire fighting equipment found onboard, BA gear, and casualty recovery in a smoke-filled compartment. You will complete a live-fire exercise and use various types of fire extinguishers.

STCW Personal Survival Techniques (1 Day)

You will get the chance to go back to the pool and get into the life raft. We will update you with changes, techniques, and equipment since your last Sea Survival Course.

  • Safety equipment, training and certification.
