Our Superyacht Steward/ess Course gives you the essential skills needed to enter the superyacht industry as a Steward or Stewardess. A great option if you are new to the industry and want to learn your role on-board.
A job as a Steward or Stewardess on a Ssuperyacht is like no other; one which requires a unique set of skills. Working on yachts is amazing, you get to spend your working day in the sunshine on-board an incredible yacht in some of the nicest places on earth – there are not may day jobs like this! The pay is not bad either, the average salary for a new Stewardess ranges from €1,800 to €3,000 per month, depending on the size and type of yacht. Furthermore, this income can be tax-free. Then there are the tips! Working on a superyacht can be hard work, long hours and you will be away from home for long periods but very rewarding and for many the start of a fantastic career!
If life on the ocean is something you are interested in then this two week course includes all the qualifications and skills you need to start a new career as a Steward/ess.

The course starts out with STCW Basic Safety Training, mandatary for anybody working on large yachts. The Basic Safety training, although having a serious side, is also great fun and you will learn a lot about your responsibilities as professional crew.
Next is our Stewardess Training Course where you will learn all you need to know to start a career as a Steward or Stewardess. Your instructor will show you everything, from how to make a bed to producing that perfect coffee, arranging flowers and that important 5* service that guests and owners will expect from their crew. You will host a cocktail party serving drinks and canapés to our VIP guests. Captains and owners expect strong hospitality skills; having completed this programme you will have a thorough grounding in all areas needed to perform effectively on-board.
Powerboat training and how to use a VHF radio are included in the course giving an understanding of how to drive a fast powerboat safely.

We now include the Personal Watercraft (Jet Ski) within our two-week Superyacht Stewardess Course. If your first job is on a smaller yacht then having a PWC qualification will allow you to drive the Jet Skis on-board.

Pre-requisite experience and qualifications
You must be 18 years old to train with Flying Fish.
The course is suitable for complete beginners who are looking to work as a Steward/ess on a commercial yacht, though experience in the hospitality industry is useful. To succeed in the superyacht industry you must present a smart, well-groomed appearance. You should have a strong work ethic, vital to your new career.
To work on a superyacht you will need to complete an ENG1 Medical to say that you are fit to work at sea. We recommend you complete your ENG1 before you start your course. Once you have completed your training and passed your ENG1 Medical you will then be ready to begin your adventure.
The course is made up of fun, action-packed practical and theory exercises. The course is split into two sections. The first being your mandatory STCW Basic Safety Course followed by your stewardess training and other useful skills, essential for putting you ahead of others looking for work in the industry. Here is an overview of the course structure:
STCW Basic Safety Training – 6 Days
STCW Basic Safety is a compulsory qualification for crew on Superyachts
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting.
- Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities.
- Proficiency in Security Awareness.
- Personal Survival Techniques.
- Elementary First Aid.
VHF Radio Operators Course – 1 Day
RYA Radio VHF Short Range Certificate (GMDSS/DSC) teaches you marine radio techniques and emergency procedures.
Stewardess Training – 5 Days
During your training on this course, you will cover these subjects:
- Professional aspects of crewing on superyachts.
- Skills needed and the role of the interior crew and life on-board.
- Wine appreciation day.
- Cocktails and coffee day.
- Getting a job, careers advice, creating your CV, references, interview techniques.
- Housekeeping and laundry.
- Cleaning products and their uses.
- Organise and run a cocktail party for VIP guests.
- Flowers arranging and table set up.
- Silver service training.
- Mooring protocol, fenders and lines.
- Food and hygiene course.
RYA Powerboat Level 2 Course – 2 Days
This course is a legal requirement for crew who need to drive the yacht tender. You will be on the water in one of our RIBs focusing on slow speed manoeuvres plus theory knowledge needed to drive the yacht tender.
PWC (Jet Ski) Course – 1 Day
This practical, exciting course will teach you all there is to know about the Jet Ski and how to use the ski safely. Jet Skis are often found on luxury yachts and it’s the crews job to know how to use these toys!
Superyacht Recruitment Day in Antibes (Optional)
There is no additional charge for this Recruitment Day in the South of France. Our staff in Antibes help you through the process of seeking employment. The day includes; looking at local crew agencies, what to expect, personal presentation, do’s and don’ts, dock walking, and a final polish of your CV before you begin your career in the superyacht industry.
