Join Flying Fish and start your career as a Deckhand

Flying Fish Superyacht Deckhand Training course gives you the essential qualifications required to enter the Superyacht industry as a Deckhand. Working on a Superyacht is an exciting and well-paid career option for those who like to live life outdoors.

The role of a Deckhand

A Deckhand is the entry level position for most crew looking to work on Superyachts. A Deckhand’s role will be varied, however, the first responsibility for a Deckhand is the meticulous cleaning and maintenance of the exterior of the yacht, which must be kept in pristine condition at all times. You may pitch in and help the Interior crew during busy turn arounds. During maintenance periods, you will help out with some of the routine maintenance tasks that can’t be done while on charter, including; varnishing, painting, Awlgrip and repairing the various toys, like jet-skis, that the yacht will have onboard.

What skills do I need?

You don’t need to have come from a boating background but any experience in water sports, diving, or sailing will look good on the CV. You will like to work outdoors and are not afraid of hard work. You are happy living away from home for long periods of time, have a good work ethic and can think outside the box.

What qualifications do I need?

You will need your STCW Basic Safety Certificates, a minimum requirement for all professional yacht crew. You will also need an ENG1 Medical Certificate so show that you are fit to go to sea.  Power Boat Level 2 is required so that you have the qualification to drive the yacht’s tenders and a PWC qualification so you can handle the Jet skis that the yachts have onboard. Next are the small, subtle skills that all new Deckhands need: from GRP repairs, how to use a VHF radio, Security training and have a very good CV.
