The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal is the first of three RYA professional qualifications that demonstrate competency on a sailing or motor yacht. The Yachtmaster Coastal is for crew or skippers who want to venture on longer coastal passages.
To become a Yachtmaster Coastal you must have a depth of experience both inshore and on Coastal passages during the day and at night. You learn how to keep your crew and yacht safe at all times. Navigation, weather, maintenance and the ability to lead are all important qualities of a Yachtmaster Coastal.
What does the Yachtmaster Coastal qualify me to do?
Holders of the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence are able to skipper a vessel up to 24m in length, 20 miles from a safe haven. You will feel comfortable taking a cruising yacht on a Coastal passage. The experience gained will give the confidence that if there were any problems you would have the answers. Having the qualification provides that reassurance allowing you to venture away from your usual cruising ground and explore new places.
The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal is the first professional qualification within the RYA scheme. You are able to apply for a commercial endorsement allowing you to work as a professional skipper.

To sit the Yachtmaster Coastal exam candidates should have a broad depth of experience. Obviously each candidate will come from a different background and experienced different conditions along the way. Broadly speaking the candidate should have the following sea time:

The next step
Once you have completed your Yachtmaster Coastal exam the next step would be the RYA Yachtmaster Offshore, which allows you to venture up to 150 miles offshore.
The first step towards a career on a Superyacht
The traditional pathway to a career on a Superyacht has started with the Yachtmaster Offshore qualification. However, it has been recognised that crew working on large yachts find it difficult to gain the necessary experience required for the Yachtmaster Offshore. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency have recently announced an alternative route.
Today candidates with a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence are able to begin training towards a restricted UK Officer of the Watch.
